Sheet Metal Punching / Sheet Metal Bending

Constant growth in production has led the company to invest in new machinery in order to respond to the increasingly complex demands of clients. The company has therefore introduced the punching process, which fits in alongside other complementary activities such as cutting and press forming.

This process is performed using special machinery which is capable of recreating designs with extreme precision, at up to 4mm of the width of the sheet metal and a work area equal to 1525×2500 mm.

In the majority of cases, the bending process follows the punching phase. In fact, pieces created using the punching machine can be bent where necessary using an included bending press, in addition to a bending robot.

Some Types of Metal Bending

Air Bending

Air bending is performed using a punch that presses the sheet metal into a lower “V” die. The advantages of air bending include:

  • the lower force required compared to other sheet metal working processes, which makes it possible to bend even thick workpieces;
  • the possibility of obtaining different angles using the same tools.

Bottom Bending or Coining

Coining, or bottom bending, involves using a punch that presses the sheet metal completely into the bottom of the lower die. In this process, the punch and die must have the same angle of inclination, making it possible to “coin” the sheet metal and completely eliminate springback.

Coining is mainly used to create 90° angles in very thin sheet metal.

The main advantages include:

  • high bending accuracy, the possibility of obtaining smaller angles than with air bending, and repeatability of the bending angle.

Sheet Metal Flattening

Flattening consists of two stages: a pre-bend, obtained through air bending, followed by a flattening operation in which the sheet metal is completely or partially compressed. This technique is mainly used to increase rigidity, protect edges and eliminate exposed sharp edges.
